China’s official bullion and commemorative coins are issued under the authority of the People’s Bank of China, distributed by China Gold Coin Incorporation (founded 1987) and struck at the Shanghai, Shenzhen and Shenyang mints.
Its signature product is the Gold Panda, introduced in 1982 with an annually changing design that has made it a collector favorite as much as a bullion coin. In 2016 the Panda switched from troy-ounce to metric-gram denominations. China’s mints also produce the Lunar series and a wide range of commemoratives prized across Greater China, where gifting gold is deeply embedded in the culture.
