About This Calculator
This tool calculates the melt value of gold — the intrinsic precious metal content based on current spot prices. Melt value is what you'd theoretically receive if the gold were melted down and sold as raw metal, before any fabrication premium.
Key Terms Explained
- Spot price: The live market price for one troy ounce of 24-karat pure gold
- Troy ounce: 31.1035 grams — the standard unit for precious metals
- Fineness: Purity expressed as parts per thousand (e.g., 999.9 = 99.99% pure)
- Karat: Purity expressed as parts per 24 (e.g., 22K = 22/24 = 91.67% pure)
- Melt value: weight × purity × spot price (per troy oz equivalent)
Why Melt Value ≠ What You'll Get
Bullion coins and bars sell at a premium above spot when buying, and at a slight discount to spot when selling back to dealers. The gap between buy and sell prices is the "spread". See our guide on understanding gold premiums.
