The story

History

The coin now known as the Australian Gold Kangaroo launched in 1986 under a different name: the Australian Gold Nugget. The Perth Mint, operating since 1899, chose gold nuggets as its initial reverse theme — a nod to Australia's gold-rush history.

The Gold Nugget ran from 1986 to 1988. In 1989, the Perth Mint made a defining decision: switch the reverse to a kangaroo design — and change the design every single year. This annual change made the coin unique in the bullion world and established it as a premier collectible series alongside its role as a pure investment coin.

The annual variety was marketing genius: collectors had reason to buy every year, and low-mintage years could command numismatic premiums above gold content. The Perth Mint's reputation for exceptional striking quality made the Kangaroo a prestige product, especially in Asian markets.

The Kangaroo is produced in an unusually wide range of sizes — from 1/20 oz up to the famous 1-tonne gold coin (a Guinness World Record holder). The 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg sizes are popular with high-volume investors seeking lower per-unit premiums.

An annually changing kangaroo design — every year since 1989 has featured a different rendition of the red or gray kangaroo. This annual change is the coin's most distinctive feature.

Authentication & counterfeit watch

A genuine 1 oz Kangaroo weighs 31.10 g (pure gold), 32.10 mm diameter, 2.80 mm thick, and is non-magnetic. The Perth Mint's striking quality is a tell in itself — fields are exceptionally clean and the relief crisp; soft or grainy detail is suspicious. Because the reverse changes annually, cross-check the design against the year on the coin (a mismatch between the dated obverse and a known reverse design is a red flag). The "P" mintmark should be present and sharp. As ever, weight + diameter + thickness together defeat most fakes.

Authentication guidance is general reference, not a substitute for professional verification. For high-value purchases, buy from reputable dealers and consider professional grading.

For the investor

Investment considerations

For investors oriented to the Asia-Pacific gold market, the Kangaroo is the premier choice — strong recognition in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia makes it easy to sell there. It is IRA eligible under US rules.

The annual design change means multi-year accumulators end up with a mix of designs; this barely affects liquidity (dealers buy all years) but matters if you want a uniform set.

The large-size coins (10 oz, 1 kg) offer lower premiums per ounce, attractive for holding significant weight with minimal overhead, though liquidity for very large pieces is thinner than for 1 oz coins.

Typical premium Typically 4–6% over spot for 1 oz; large sizes carry lower per-ounce premiums.

Common questions

Australian Gold Kangaroo FAQ

Why does the Kangaroo’s design change every year?

The Perth Mint has changed the reverse annually since 1989, making the series collectible. Older or low-mintage years can carry a premium above their gold content.

Is the Australian Kangaroo IRA-eligible?

Yes. At 99.99% purity, struck by the highly regarded Perth Mint, it qualifies for US self-directed gold IRAs.

Are the big 10 oz and 1 kg coins a good deal?

They carry lower premiums per ounce, so they’re efficient for holding lots of gold — but they’re less liquid and harder to sell in pieces than 1 oz coins.

Is it the same as the old Gold Nugget?

Yes — the series launched as the Gold Nugget (1986–1988) before switching to the kangaroo reverse in 1989. Same coin lineage, different reverse theme.
